Asphalt Shingles — Class 4 Impact-Rated

Class 4 impact-resistant asphalt shingle installation

Asphalt shingles are the dominant residential roof in Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wyoming — and in hail country, the shingle you pick is the single biggest variable in how long that roof lasts. We lead with IKO Nordic (UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated, polymer-modified asphalt) on virtually every re-roof, backed by a full IKO ROOFPRO Select installation package. Class 4 shingles qualify for insurance premium discounts of 20–35% with most carriers in our 5-state service area, and hold up visibly better to the hail Colorado's Hail Alley and the KC metro's tornado season deliver every May through July.

Why the Details Matter on a Residential Roof

A shingle package is only a fraction of a roof system. Decking condition, fastener pattern, underlayment choice, ice and water shield placement, ventilation balance, and flashing quality are what decide whether a roof lasts 15 years or 30. We walk every deck before loading new material and address failures at the layer that caused them — not just at the surface.

  • Decking Inspection: We check for delaminated OSB, soft spots, rotted sheathing, and insufficient nailing to framing. Bad decking is replaced before any underlayment goes down.
  • Underlayment: Synthetic underlayment outperforms 15- and 30-pound felt for tear resistance and moisture behavior. We use synthetic as standard on most residential tear-offs.
  • Ice and Water Shield: Self-adhering membrane at eaves, valleys, around penetrations, and in vulnerable transitions — critical for Colorado freeze-thaw and ice dam zones.
  • Balanced Ventilation: Intake at the soffits and exhaust at the ridge. An unbalanced attic shortens shingle life and voids many manufacturer warranties.
  • Flashings Done Right: Step flashing at walls, proper chimney counter- flashing set into a reglet where appropriate, closed or open valleys executed per manufacturer spec, and drip edge at eaves and rakes.

The Asphalt Shingle Lineup We Install

We specify Class 4 impact-rated shingles as the default on hail-belt re-roofs because the insurance-discount math and the hail-performance math both point the same direction. IKO Nordic is our flagship; the rest of the lineup is on the table when an HOA palette, warranty tier, or specific product feature calls for it.

  • IKO Nordic (Lead Product): UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated, polymer-modified asphalt, SBS-modified for cold-weather flexibility. Our flagship shingle across Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Installed under the IKO ROOFPRO Select warranty program for extended material and labor coverage not available outside top-tier IKO contractors.
  • Malarkey Vista & Windsor: Class 4 impact-rated polymer-modified (NEX polymer-modified asphalt), algae-resistant, strong hail record. Our secondary Class 4 line when color or profile calls for it.
  • GAF Timberline Armor Shield II: Class 4 impact-rated laminate with StainGuard Plus algae protection — one of the broadest HOA color palettes in the Class 4 category.
  • CertainTeed Landmark IR: Class 4 laminate backed by the CertainTeed Integrity Roof System warranty — strong option for HOAs that require a specific manufacturer.
  • Atlas StormMaster Shake: Class 4 impact-rated with a designer shake profile — bridge option when the budget wants Class 4 but the look wants designer.
  • Standard Architectural (non-Class 4): IKO Cambridge, GAF Timberline HDZ, CertainTeed Landmark, Tamko Heritage, Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration. We install these when hail exposure is low, the HOA requires a specific non-impact product, or budget rules out the Class 4 upgrade. Most of our 5-state market doesn't fall in that category, but we cover the full line when it does.

Tear-Off vs. Overlay

Most municipalities in Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wyoming limit residential roofs to two layers of shingles. Even where a second-layer overlay is code-permitted, we almost always recommend a full tear-off. You get a real look at the decking, cleaner flashings, and the full manufacturer warranty. An overlay hides problems and shortens the life of the new shingles because of heat retention and uneven surface.

Why Choose Roof Technologies for Your Home's Roof

  • Hail and Wind Claim Expertise: We document damage with photos, diagrams, and measurements, meet your adjuster on the roof, and align the scope of work with your carrier's estimate so you are not stuck covering the gap.
  • Workmanship Warranty: Written labor warranty from Roof Technologies on top of the manufacturer's material warranty.
  • One Crew, One Company: We do not subcontract your roof to rotating crews. The team you meet is the team that installs.
